S3, the Silicon Valley-based maker of Internet and multimedia

appliances, has appointed two agencies to handle pan-Asian consumer PR

for its Rio MP3 player.

Porter Novelli, which pitched and won the account in the US last year,

will handle several Asian markets, while Newell PR has won the critical

Hong Kong and China markets.

Fees for each market are US$150,000 a year, making the full value

of the account more than $900,000 a year across Asia.

S3 has divided its Asian market into two tiers, with Australia, Hong

Kong, and China in the first tier, and Singapore, Taiwan and Korea in

the second.

"The tier one countries have much bigger markets in terms of population

and are early adopters - China is expected to explode for this type of

technology when the country enters WTO," said S3's Victoria Tsang.
