The gentrified air of the ancient Water Towns provides a contrast to bustling Shanghai.
The closest to Shanghai is Zhujiajiao, a 50-minute drive from downtown. It’s the smallest of the ancient towns crisscrossed by canals but its costumed gondoliers, teahouses, stone bridges and cobblestone streets give visitors an idea of how life was in China about 1,700 years ago.

The high-end favourite in Pudong is the 981-room Shangri-La, which overlooks the Huangpu River. It has extensive meeting facilities and international experience.
Across the river in Puxi, the Portman Ritz-Carlton is a regular favourite with impeccable service and a central location.

Zhouzhuang, about an hour from Shanghai, is the biggest and best-known of the Water
Towns. From Zhouzhuang, there are canal trips to the Water Town of Tongli or to nearby Suzhou.
