Rival tipped to buy out Malaysia's Sun

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's The Sun newspaper is set to be acquired by market-leading rival The Star, according to industry reports.

A decision is most likely to be made after the Chinese New Year break, according to Manjiri Kamat, MD of MEC Malaysia. “It is not clear how management of The Star would reposition The Sun or if its editorial direction might change,” she said.

Esther Chan, media services director of Carat Malaysia, said: “The Star has the financial clout and The Sun looks ripe for the picking. It’s doing well in terms of revenue and editorial. But for readers it’s bad, because we’ll have one less source of news.”

However, Chan Kien Sing, MD of The Sun, told Media: “There is no such proposal. There has been speculation, but there’s no truth in it.”

The news followed the acquisition of a majority stake in The Sun by Vincent Tan, the daily’s owner.
