Rival Thai newspapers launch resized editions

BANGKOK - Thailand's leading English-language newspapers, The Bangkok Post and The Nation, have both launched re-sized editions today.

The rival titles have both switched from a broadsheet to a smaller "Berliner" format, mirroring the global newspaper trend towards a more commuter-friendly read.

The Bangkok Post - believed to have been the first to decide to go Berliner - has invested Bt 1 billion (US$30 million) in a new printing press for its revamped paper. It has also launched a weekend sport section and revamped its Thai-language title, Post Today.

Media agencies say that the move is, at least in part, to cut down on costs as pressure mounts on circulation numbers and revenues.
