Revisiting the city's local classics

New builds and refurbishment programmes are constantly changing the capital's mix of conference facilities. Susie Harwood hunts out a selection of the more impressive options

InterContinental London Park LaneThe InterContinental Group’s landmark hotel, which occupies the enviable 1 Park Lane address, reopened its doors last November following a US$150 million refurbishment. It offers a smart new meeting and events space with contemporary decor, including the ballroom which can accommodate up to 750 guests, six interconnecting event suites and six meeting rooms.All rooms offer views of Park Lane and the royal parks, or Piccadilly. On completion in March, the hotel will have 387 guestrooms, 60 suites, and a swanky new spa.

 Grosvenor House HotelAlso enjoying a prestigious Park Lane location, Grosvenor House has revamped itsevent space, 86 Park Lane, as part of its ongoing multimillion-dollar renovation. Itnow boasts 20 meeting rooms, which can accommodate between 10 and 400 delegates, all with natural daylight and fresh green and gold colours.The Great Room, Europe’s largest banqueting space, and ballroom have alsobeen redecorated, and February saw the reopening of the Red Bar and Park Room, thelatter of which features a Charles Heidsieck cellar, allowing guests to sample vintagesfrom the 1970s to present day.

 Church House Conference CentreThe Assembly Hall at this historic 19-room venue has been completely repainted incream, sand and gold, and the original 1930s uplighters restored, while new architectural lighting has been added to highlight the domed ceiling. It can now accommodate 372 for dinners, 550 for receptions, and there is theatre-style seating for 664.Two new meeting rooms and a business centre and conference office have also been added.

 The Mayfair HotelThe five-star Mayfair Hotel, which dates back to the 1920s and is renowned for its royal connections, reopened last October after a US$150 million revamp. The newcontemporary lobby has been furnished with creations from top design houses, including sofas and chairs by Fendi. The Crystal Room, which boasts the largest Baccarat chandelier in Europe, holds up to 350 people.Other spaces include a 201-seat, state-ofthe-art private theatre, the Danziger suite forup to 300 guests, and the split-level atrium for up to 100. Guest rooms feature richfabrics, fine furnishings, Bang & Olufsen televisions and triple-glazed windows.

 Haymarket HotelThe Haymarket Hotel, a landmark building designed by John Nash (the architect ofBuckingham Palace and the adjoining Haymarket Theatre), opens for business thismonth and will offer 55 individually designed bedrooms and suites, an exclusive four-level townhouse, bar and restaurant, and a library.

There will also be several private event spaces and The Shooting Gallery on the ground floor, a private dining room seating 50.
