Reader's Digest readies for January launch in China

SHANGHAI - Reader's Digest has confirmed speculation that it will launch in China, via a newsstand model rather than its traditional direct mail subscription route.

According to regional advertising director Simon Cholmeley, the company has formed a joint venture with Shanghai Puzhi Magazine Publishing Company, a subsidiary of the Shanghai Press and Periodical Development Company, which holds the licence for the magazine in China.

While the launch will proceed via a newsstand model, Cholmeley noted that “we have plans to grow the subscriptions after the launch period”.

The Chinese name for the magazine will be Puzhi, which translates to ‘Universal Knowledge’, and issues will be priced at Rmb 12 (US$1.50).
