Qunar.com found guilty of infringement

BEIJING - Chinese travel search engine Qunar.com must pay online travel agency CTrip.com the sum of Rmb 1,000 (US$146) after it was found guilty of copyright infringement by a Beijing court.

The suit, which was filed in November, centres around Qunar’s ability to crawl Ctrip's site and upload users’ posts found on Ctrip’s pages.

According to Chinese reports, the court has ordered Qunar to stop all infringement activities and post a public apology on its homepage.

CEO of Qunar Fritz Demopoulos (pictured) said his company will appeal the ruling as Qunar operates in a similar manner as other search engines that crawl third-party sites.

Both companies are key players in China’s burgeoning online travel sector, with CTrip positioned as China’s online travel agency leader, claiming nearly 60 per cent market share, while Qunar claims 24 million visitors to its site each month.
