Qatar Airways shelves US$30m global media review

DOHA - Qatar Airways has shelved a six-agency pitch for its US$30 million global media account, a move that is expected to see QMedia, a new entity formed from an alliance between JC Decaux and local Qatari partners, inherit the business.

Agencies including Carat, Starcom, Maxus, ZenithOptimedia and Initiative were invited through Qatar's creative incumbent Batey to pitch at the end of last year. According to a media agency source, the pitch was focused on reducing media costs.

However, a change of heart from the airline's family owners meant that the review was put on hold. Meanwhile, the client has stipulated that QMedia must be part of any media request-for-pitch or media plan proposal.

How QMedia will work with media agencies should the media review by reincarnated remains unclear.

Alan Fairnington, the CEO of Batey, commented: "Batey works in strategic business partnership with our clients, so we make a real effort to work closely with every part of the communication delivery system, including off-line and on-line media planning and buying."
