Qantas budget arm targets Asia Pacific

SYDNEY Qantas is set to launch a low-cost airline on Asia Pacific routes in the second half of next year in response to the collapse of Ansett. "We've looked into introducing this low-cost airline a few times into Asia, now is the right time," Qantas manager corporate sponsorships and tourism marketing Mr Anthony Hayes said. The airline, which will be called Australian Airlines, is targeted at cutting its operational costs, enabling the planes to offer both a business and economy class. Mr Hayes added that while the airline had not confirmed the destinations it would be flying to, China, Japan, South Korea and other growth areas in the region, are being considered. "The Asia market has been reasonably healthy and resilient for us," he said. "Conference-wise we have always had a great relationship with groups from Singapore and Hong Kong. India has also been strong for us. We need to show Asian groups we're interested in doing business with them."
