Publicis bags BMW's Southeast Asia account

SOUTHEAST ASIA - Automotive giant BMW Group Asia has reportedly handed its Southeast Asia creative account to Publicis after shortlisting three agencies, including TBWA and McCann Worldgroup.

The auto brand recently called a pitch for a full-service marketing agency. It did not shortlist U5OK, the incumbent on the account.

A Publicis spokesperson refused to confirm the appointment. A BMW spokesperson said that the company would be releasing a statement on its creative agency appointment later today and refused to confirm the news.

The pitch was managed by consultancy R3.

In a recently concluded digital pitch for the Mini brand, BMW had handed its account to Kinetic after a final three-way shoot-out against Publicis and Tribal DDB. The Mini account has been held by U5OK in Bangkok since the end of 2005.

In May, BMW handed part of its China creative account to Leo Burnett, following a two-round pitch that began in January, which also included incumbent Interone, Bates141, DraftFCB and Publicis. The Southeast Asia award does not affect Leo Burnett's account in China.

In July, BMW called an emergency press conference and announced its withdrawal from Formula One, making it the second major auto manufacturer to pull out of the sport following Honda's withdrawal in December last year.
