Public Relations: Careers Q&A - Sharon Foo, Public relations manager - Watsons - Your Personal Store

How did you get into PR?

With my interest in communications and writing, I chose PR as my first job after graduation and joined The Rowland Company in Hong Kong.

What do you enjoy about your job?

I enjoy meeting different people and seeing new things all the time.

Watsons is part of a big group where I have the opportunity to work with many talented and experienced executives in all kinds of disciplines.

My current job also requires me to find new ideas and angles to present Watsons as a brand and a shopping destination.

What do you dislike?

Communication breakdowns.

Who was you mentor and why?

My father, a 30-year PR veteran. His dedication and passion in PR are an example and inspiration for me.

How do you handle difficult clients?

Flexibility and sincerity are important. Clients are often difficult because they do not get what they want.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I am quite certain PR will still be an important part of my career, but by then I hope to use the connections and skills amassed over the years to use PR in volunteer or charity work.

Which PR person do you most admire and why?

(Hong Kong legislator) Selina Chow - I admire her all-round talent and her passion in work and life.

Any advice for a PR rookie?

You may hear about all the glamorous stories about PR but if you are in it just for the fun, you will not enjoy a successful career.

PR is a very personal career that cannot be taken just as a job during office hours. You should learn about everything around you, which can enrich your skills and knowledge of PR.
