Public Relations: Careers Q&A - Holly Tse; Senior account executive, Grayling China/Hong Kong

How did you get into PR?

Marketing and PR always interested me, so following my degree, I took a PG Dip in PR and then started in a consultancy.

What do you enjoy about your job?

The variety. I get to work across different business sectors. It's challenging and diverse; my day is never the same and I get to meet a range of interesting characters - client-side and in the media. I'm constantly learning and can apply that knowledge to new projects.

What do you dislike?

That sometimes, PR is not as valued as it should be.

What inspires your career?

Completing a successful campaign and seeing the tangible results for my client in terms of coverage generated, delegates at an event, or increased recognition for their brand.

Who was your mentor and why?

Jacqueline Wong at Fancl House. It was her enthusiasm for PR that encouraged me to take this path.

How do you handle difficult clients?

With patience!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I'd like to be heading up Grayling's operation for China and North Asia.

Which PR person do you most admire and why?

Caroline Mak of Mannings. She's not a PR consultant, but she understands its importance, and is skillful at communicating her company's brand values in front of the media, while letting her own personality and enthusiasm shine through.

Any advice for a PR rookie?

Be prepared to work hard, be flexible, be patient and be open to new ideas.

Your biggest mistake?

None to confess.

Your greatest achievement?

I'm most proud of a recent project in which a well-known champagne brand wanted to extend its profile and coverage among Hong Kong's business media, which we did successfully.
