As mainland China finally releases figures on the scale of the severe acute respiratory sundrome (Sars) crisis it is battling with, in Beijing at least, this newly-found openness belies a harsher reality: that in order for Sars sufferers to be treated, others are being turfed out of desperately needed hospital beds.
