PRWEEK: Careers Q&A - Stephanie Cheng, Marketing communications manager, Century Roxy Hotel (Associated with Novotel Hotels), Singapore

How did you get into PR?

During my hotel management training at The Dorchester Hotel, London, I discovered that marketing/public relations is what I enjoy doing .

What's the mood right now in the market you're in?

Positive - because the economic forecast is looking good and probably because the general public is somewhat more familiar/used to various threats to a harmonious society today.

What do you enjoy about your work environment?

The endless opportunities to be creative/innovative, the challenges that comes with the job (so tasks on hand are not monotonous) and being able to meet and work with many genuinely nice people.

What are your career inspirations?

The dream of setting up my own business one day and learning as much as I can through the 'university of life' before that.

What piece of advice would you give to a PR 'rookie'?

To cultivate patience and perseverance. The rest is common sense or will come with experience, which is a personal journey.

Your biggest mistake?

Probably because I am often too careful in decision-making, tasks, etc, I have not made any grave error (yet!). However, my assumption that other people will work on the same time frame and urgency as I will, is often wrong.

What has been your greatest achievement?

Personally, I feel that because specific incidents of achievements come and go, I would consider an ongoing 'achievement' of mine as my greatest - and that is knowing that I try my best in every task I do and continuously try to accomplish future tasks in better, faster ways all the time.
