My first job focused on developing membership benefits for a company that managed private golf and country clubs around Asia. Part of my role was internal communications to publicise new services to members. I became steadily more involved in external communications, communicating with not just the media, but also other key stakeholders.
What's the mood right now in the market you're in?
Everyone in the industry is looking to Asia as the most exciting region globally. There's a strong competitive streak mixed with optimism.
What do you enjoy about your job?
The variety of the day-to-day challenges. Working for the asset management, insurance and banking operations of ING supporting 14 countries around the region means there's always lots going on.
What are your career aspirations?
Continuing to be challenged in my role. Being the head of a department doesn't necessarily allow you to do that.
Advice for a PR rookie?
Never burn your bridges. Although everyone talks of Hong Kong in the same breath as a village and it's true, particularly in PR. You change companies or roles and you're suddenly working with someone you said goodbye to as a colleague previously.
Your biggest mistake?
I've had good fortune so far in that the mistakes I have made (and there have been many) have never reached the stage where the consequences are serious, either for me or the company for whom I work. I know I haven't got all the answers and listening to others and learning from experiences has kept me on the right track.
Your greatest achievement?
Apart from getting every job for which I've applied, the ability to win trust from colleagues quickly makes me smile.
