Pittsburgh has embarked upon a US$2billion investment spree to boost the city's convention and corporate travel business.
A US$328million convention centre will open by March 2003. The venue will have 49 meeting rooms, 31,500sqm of exhibition space and a 3,700sqm ballroom.
Construction has also begun on a US$300million waterfront development that will incorporate entertainment venues, offices, apartments, restaurants and retail stores.
Hotel projects include a US$44million Marriott Renaissance Hotel and a US$32million Hyatt Regency at Pittsburgh International Airport.
The Marriott will have 300 rooms and 1,300sqm of meeting space, while the Hyatt will feature 330 rooms and a 1,950sqm conference centre.
"The new centre will enable us to pursue larger conventions and to book multiple events," GPCVB president Mr Joe McGrath said. "We will continue to market our assets to the meetings and convention industry."
