Pertamina resurrects pitch

JAKARTA - State oil and gas firm Pertamina has revived a pitch to launch an above- and below-the-line campaign persuading consumers to switch from kerosene oil to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

The oil company had called a pitch in February this year but it was shelved abruptly for undisclosed reasons.

According to reports, the oil giant has been facing resistance from consumers who are unwilling to switch to LPG due to inconveniences attached to the conversion process.

Aiming to reduce subsidies for kerosene, the Indonesian government in December 2006 launched the kerosene-to-LPG conversion programme, to be completed in 2010, with Pertamina as the main implementing organisation.

Pertamina was aiming to provide liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders and gas stoves to 20 million households by the end of this year but according to reports it may not be able to meet this year's target due to a lack of canisters and refill stations. By mid-September it had only given the packages to 9.3 milion households.
