PCCW calls media review

HONG KONG - Local telecom giant PCCW is believed to be reviewing its Hong Kong media duties.

While the scope of the review remains unclear, it is thought that incumbent MindShare will defend the brief against at least two other contenders.

Though PCCW remains the dominant fixed line player in Hong Kong, profitability remains an issue. It is unclear to what extent the media pitch is related chairman Richard Li Tzar-kai’s announcement at the end of May that PCCW will be restructuring to improve its tax and operational efficiency, amid continued expansion and re-investment.

However, given the continued relatively high valuations of telecom assets, analysts have suggested that PCCW would improve profitability by focussing on core strengths in its home market Hong Kong.
