Omnicom acquires stake in Shunya Group

SHANGHAI - BBDO has extended its presence in China through the acquisition of a stake in Shunya Communications Group, a development that has been on the cards since the middle of last year (Media, 8 August).

Pending final approval by the Chinese regulators, Shunya’s four principal operating agencies - Shunya International Ad, Shunya Profuture Events Marketing, Shunya International PR and Shunya PR - will become part of BBDO, Proximity, Porter Novelli and Pleon respectively. From its beginnings in 1999 as a five-person boutique start-up, Shunya today is one of the PRC’s leading integrated communications groups, boasting a staff of 500.

Serge Dumont (pictured), SVP and president Asia-Pacific at Omnicom, pointed to Shunya’s network in China’s interior provinces as a boon, adding that these regions are a key priority to the network’s clients.

“Shunya’s experiences and capabilities are complementary to ours,” said Chris Thomas, regional head of BBDO. “Shunya has the whole suite of capabilities and a deep understanding of Chinese consumers, so it brings both range and depth.”
