OMD hires ex-Universal exec

OMD has appointed Leela Nair to the position of director of strategic planning for Southeast Asia.

Nair makes the transition from Australia, where she spent five years at Universal McCann, most recently as national investment director. Nair, who will report to OMD Southeast Asia reg-ional managing director Jim Goh, explained that her decision to move to OMD was prompted by the agency's willingness to experiment.

"It's an exciting time to be in Asia at the moment and OMD's passion for creativity was very attractive," said Nair.

"It sits with where I see media going -- getting people's attentions in an increasingly fragmented market."

Nair will focus on projects and Visa, and hopes to bring "a new slant on things" to OMD's operations. At Universal, Nair was charged with overseeing media buying, but pointed out that planning and buying in Asia have yet to segregate within media agencies, in the manner of more developed markets.

"What's interesting is that sometimes the perception is that Asia is not as creative," added Nair. "It's time to bust those myths. We're going to see some really amazing work come out in the next few years." Nair's 15-year career in the media industry also includes stints in New Zealand and the UK, at Ogilvy & Mather and ZenithMedia, among others.
