Olympics Watch - Day Four

BEIJING - Perhaps the biggest marketing faux pas of the Games to date has surfaced in the form of a Spanish newspaper ad featuring the nation's basketball team making a 'slit-eyed' gesture.

Judging from the people Media spoke to in Beijing, it hasn’t gone down too well.

Abhinav Bindra, the 25-year-old air rifle marksmen who won India’s first ever individual Olympic gold medal, is expected to reap an endorsement
windfall, with several brands already in talks with him.

A source told Media that he could expect $1 million to $1.5 million a year in endorsments.

Meanwhile, Google has launched an SMS alert service offering mobile users Olympic updates. They can receive one medallist update per day, or up to six messages about specific competitions.

With the action in the Water Cube still at the heart of events, Speedo continues to lead our brand performance table, produced in association with brandRapport. Nike, however, has overtaken adidas in second place.

Don’t forget to vote for the best and the worst ads from the Games. Featured ads include McDonald’s, adidas, Nike and Yili. And we;ll be posting more updates from the Games at Media’s Olympics blog.
