Number of ads increases on social networks: Nielsen

HONG KONG - Approximately 2,200 Hong Kong advertisers spent HK$351 million (US$45.2 million) on digital advertising in the first half of 2009, a Nielsen report states, marking a year-on-year boost of 4.4 per cent.

According to Nielsen’s AdRelevance mid-year report, the number of online advertising campaigns in the first six months of the year jumped 22 per cent to 7,158 from 5,885 the previous year.

Examining specific categories of ads, Nielsen found that the value of advertisements on social networking sites increased value ten-fold, or 1,014 per cent, compared to the same period in 2008.

Meanwhile, advertisers were most drawn from the finance sector, which was worth HK$65 million ($8.3 million); followed by the computer electronic category on HK$51 million ($6.5 million); and education and learning on $48 million ($6.1 million).

The fields of automotive, real estate and fashion have also increased their online advertising activities, by 201 per cent, 180 per cent and 172 per cent, respectively.
