The move is expected to see Weber Shandwick, which has worked on the Nike Pro account on a project basis since the middle of last year, tighten its grip on Nike’s other China businesses, including the sports brand’s basketball, football, women’s sports and sports culture lines.
Part of the brand’s 2007 push is expected to centre on upcoming China basketballer Yi Jian Lian, who in June is tipped to follow in the footsteps of Yao Ming and head to the NBA.
“The retainer is for ongoing strategic oversight and review of projects,” said Weber Shandwick Shanghai and Guangzhou managing director, Darren Burns.
“The next 18 months in the leadup to the Olympics will be key for Nike.”
