Malaysia's rebound from the financial crisis of the late 1990s

appears to have consolidated newspapers' position as the preferred

advertising vehicle in the country.

An ACNielsen Media International study has revealed that newspapers

accounted for 59 per cent of total adspend in the first half of

1999.

However, in the same period this year, the proportion jumped to 63 per

cent.

At the same time, however, the share of the adspend pie allocated to

television declined from 32 per cent to 28 per cent.

Total adspend in the January to June months of 2000 totalled RM1.36

billion (about USdollars 357 million) up almost 30 per cent from RM1.05

billion previously.

Classified and appointment ads represented the biggest single category,

with a spend of RM235 million, one of the principal reasons behind

newspapers' success in Malaysia.

Telecom and telephony ads came in a distant second at RM89 million, with

communication, publishing and media taking third place at RM61

million.

British American Tobacco was the top advertiser with a spend of RM48

million.

It was followed by Nestle, JTI International, Telekom Malaysia, Measat

Broadcast Network, Unilever, Maxis, Petronas, Digi Telecom and Procter &

Gamble.
