Newspapers tighten grip on media in M'sia
<p>Malaysia's rebound from the financial crisis of the late 1990s
</p><p>appears to have consolidated newspapers' position as the preferred
</p><p>advertising vehicle in the country.

</p><p>An ACNielsen Media International study has revealed that newspapers
</p><p>accounted for 59 per cent of total adspend in the first half of
</p><p>1999.
</p><p><BR><BR>
</p><p>However, in the same period this year, the proportion jumped to 63 per
</p><p>cent.
</p><p><BR><BR>
</p><p>At the same time, however, the share of the adspend pie allocated to
</p><p>television declined from 32 per cent to 28 per cent.
</p><p><BR><BR>
</p><p>Total adspend in the January to June months of 2000 totalled RM1.36
</p><p>billion (about USdollars 357 million) up almost 30 per cent from RM1.05
</p><p>billion previously.
</p><p><BR><BR>
</p><p>Classified and appointment ads represented the biggest single category,
</p><p>with a spend of RM235 million, one of the principal reasons behind
</p><p>newspapers' success in Malaysia.

</p><p>Telecom and telephony ads came in a distant second at RM89 million, with
</p><p>communication, publishing and media taking third place at RM61
</p><p>million.
</p><p><BR><BR>
</p><p>British American Tobacco was the top advertiser with a spend of RM48
</p><p>million.
</p><p><BR><BR>
</p><p>It was followed by Nestle, JTI International, Telekom Malaysia, Measat
</p><p>Broadcast Network, Unilever, Maxis, Petronas, Digi Telecom and Procter &
</p><p>Gamble.
