New York Times syndication arm to close

SINGAPORE - The New York Times News Service/Syndicate will be shutting its Asia-Pacific office in Singapore, effective 1 June.

The syndicated news service, which sells content of the parent newspaper plus titles such as the Harvard Business Review, has been sacrificed as part of cost-cutting measures in the US head office, even though it is still making a profit.

Alvin Chng, director for Asia-Pacific of the News Service/Syndicate arm, who helped to start up the operation in Singapore more than five years ago, and several administrative staff will be made redundant.

The New York Times editorial bureaus in Tokyo, Beijing and Shanghai are still intact. All its current media clients in Asia will be served directly from its New York office.
