New Thai airport helps BITEC attract more businessfrom close neighbours

BANGKOK Business at Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC) has soared since the recent opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport, with exhibition visitor numbers increasing by up to 20% in the first quarter of this year.

BITEC business development director, Sarnit Karunyavanij, told CEI Asia Pacific that acombination of Thailand’s hub positioning, the airport’s location, and greater international marketing efforts are fuelling the growth. He said: “More regional visitors are finding it very convenient for a one-day visit to events at BITEC, landing at the new airport in the morning and leaving for their home cities on the evening or night flights.”Sarnit added that the airport’s improved passenger handling abilities and the growth of low-cost carriers were also making it easier, and more cost effective, for overseas delegates to access exhibitions in a timely fashion.BITEC is only a 15-minute drive from the new airport, as compared to the 45-minute driveit took to get to the old Don Muang Airport. This is enticing local markets such as Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and China to visit on day trips, rather than staying overnight in Bangkok.BITEC can host up to 20,000 delegates and 100,000 visitors a day, with four divisible roomstotalling 20,000 sqm and a 10,000 sqm column-free hall.
