Murdoch takes a 28 per cent pay cut after advertising slump

NEW YORK - Rupert Murdoch (pictured) has been forced to take a pay cut of 28 per cent as the global recession and declining advertising revenue continue to eat into his earnings.

The media mogul’s earnings are down to US$19.9 million from $27.5 million as his company made a loss of $3.4 billion in the year to June.

Murdoch's base salary of $8.1 million remained unchanged but his performance-related bonus plummeted 69 per cent to $5.4 million from $17.5 million a year ago.

James Murdoch, who oversees News Corp in Europe and Asia, saw his total remuneration drop to $9.2 million from $10.9 million.

News Corp's slide in earnings is largely due to restructuring and downward revisions in the value of its assets.

Large-scale job losses and high-profile departures have taken place at social networking website MySpace, while in Asia a restructure at Star TV is expected to see some 200 staff being made redundant.

The company’s newspapers have also taken a hit and Murdoch has indicated that he intends to charge readers for access to online content.
