MTV Japan readies mobile networking

ASIA-PACIFIC - MTV Networks, through Japan subsidiary Viacom International, has unveiled its first mobile social networking service, myMTV, in a move which marks the first time the company has launched such a service.

MyMTV will be offered through three of Japan’s leading telcos — NTT DoCoMo, KDDI and Softbank Mobile — and will allow users of the WAP portal to create profile pages, upload and share video content and link to pages created by their friends or other content providers.

It will also carry video content from MTV’s global library of programming, and will allow for simultaneous video-viewing and page-browsing on mobile.

“It’s a great opportunity, but the challenge will be to establish a position in mobile media, which is a different setting than our TV ‘home base’,” said Tony Elison, senior VP and GM, digital media, Viacom International Japan.

The service will be ad supported and free to users.
