Motorola taps Chou for China

Motorola is aiming to own the music download space in China with a new campaign for its Motomusic service, featuring pop star Jay Chou.

The phased campaign - part of the handset manufacturer's bid to expand its service and song offerings on motomusic.com.cn - revolves around a dedicated minisite featuring Chou, which allows consumers to download exclusive tracks from his new album, Still fantasy.

According to agency heads at Ogilvy & Mather, the agency behind the campaign, Motomusic is China's first legal music download website.

"The concept of the site is rather edgy and unusual, and the way Jay is portrayed sheds a different light on him," said Dirk Eschenbacher, interactive ECD, Ogilvy Beijing.

The campaign also includes banners on popular online properties like Baidu, eDM supers on Channel V and MTV, and viral videos on Chou's fanblogs, toodou.com and youtube.com to drive people to the site, developed in conjunction with interactive production house, North Kingdom.
