Hughes is currently the regional business director on IBM, based in Sydney.
He will retain that role but relocate to Beijing next month.
His appointment comes about two months after MindShare won the Motorola media AORassignment from Universal McCann. The account's annual billing is estimated at US$70 million.
Hughes' Motorola team consists of 16 people who were only recently assigned the brand.
Chris Walton, MindShare China CEO said: "We must put adequate resources against the account but it's not just the number of people, it's the calibre of the people we are after."
Walton said that one of Hughes'main roles would be to train the team to develop and implement the best possible media solutions for the client.
