Microsoft increases Facebook stake

PALO ALTO - Microsoft Corporation is furthering its partnership with Facebook by taking an US$240 million equity stake in the online social network.

Microsoft will be selling advertising space for Facebook internationally and provide exclusive support as the third-party advertising platform.

“The opportunity to further collaborate as advertising partners is a big reason we have decided to take an equity stake, and is a strong statement of our confidence in the long-term economics of this partnership,” commented Kevin Johnson, president of the Platforms & Services Division at Microsoft.

The partnership is extended to 2011. Facebook is said to be worth US$15 billion.
