MEDIA: MTV showcases irreverent style

ASIA-PACIFIC: MTV has introduced what it calls its own brand of "irreverent, off-beat humour" to spice up the music channel's overall programme offering.

The idea is encapsulated in a new show, MTV Whatever Things, which combines Asia's street and pop culture with odd but fun antics of its stars, who even don tiger and dragon costumes to recreate the fight scene in the martial arts blockbuster Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

MTV Networks Asia senior vice-president of creative and content, David Flack, said: "This show brings a new and interesting brand of humour to Asia. We don't want to be completely crazy or cause problems but we didn't want to do every day things either. Basically we wanted to stretch the boundaries of television and make our viewers laugh."

The content of MTV Whatever Things is produced by newly-formed production house called Chiseen, which in Cantonese means crazy.

Chiseen is part of Deansee Entertainment which most recently produced the reality, adventure show The Wedding Race for the China market. Sponsored by Philips Consumer Electronics, the show runs for about 15 minutes and airs four times a day. Viewers can vote for their favourite skits, stunts and pranks through the main MTV website.

Jessica Kam, MTV Asia vice-president of network communications said the programme fits MTV's core brand personality. "One of the keys to our brand is an irreverent style of comedy. MTV Whatever Things achieves that objective."
