Media: Disney adds channel in Singapore

SINGAPORE: Walt Disney Television International Asia-Pacific has launched its preschool channel, Playhouse Disney, on Channel 34 of StarHub CableTV.

The channel is commercial-free and available on a subscription basis to StarHub CableTV subscribers from June 1. It is aimed at young children aged two to five years.

Walt Disney Television International (Southeast Asia/Korea) managing director Raymund Miranda said the channel filled a growing need among Asian parents, especially in Singapore.

A study by Singapore's ministry of community development and sports recently found that parents spent an average of S$500 (US$290) each month just on preschool education for their children.

"There is a growing emphasis on early education in Singapore and the rest of Asia," Miranda said.

"Parents recognise that the preschool years are a critical stage in a child's mental, physical and social development."

Combining music, puppetry, animation, CGI and live action, Playhouse Disney Channel's motto is 'learning powered by imagination'. The programming is based on the 'Whole Child' curriculum developed by early childhood specialist Dr Renee Cherow O'Leary, which seeks to engage children in early academics and the development of motor, problem-solving, social, creative and life skills.

The channel is also available in Hong Kong and Indonesia.
