Media: Comment - Internet proves new weapon in ongoing fight for a free press
The latest report from Freedom House, the US-based organisation that monitors the freedom of the press worldwide, confirms what many journalists and editors know: times of crisis are not conducive to the expansion of free media. By the report's measures, in the last year, 10 countries - Bolivia, Bulgaria, Cape Verde, Gabon, Guatemala, Guinea-Bissau, Italy, Moldova, Morroco, and the Philippines - saw a decline in press freedom, while only two - Kenya and Sierra Leone - registered notable improvements.
