McDonald's enlists comic duo for push

HONG KONG - Celebrated Hong Kong comedy duo The Softhard Wizards are the stars of a new tactical campaign from McDonald's for Chinese New Year, as the fast food giant greets the year of the pig.

Developed by creative shop Communion W, with media handled by OMD, the new TVC promotes the Grilled Curry Pork Burger by casting the comic duo in the roles of a dog and a pig

The TVC depicts the friendship between the pair, but eventually ends with the pig kicking the dog goodbye, corresponding to the Chinese zodiac calendar.

"It's about creating a fun and contemporary way of wishing ‘Happy Chinese New Year' which blends well with McDonald's brand essence of being fun, hip, young and energetic," said Randy Lai, vice-president of marketing and communications, McDonald's Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, ‘Softhard Prosperity Pals' is this year's theme for McDonald's Chinese zodiac premium gift collection. Each gift comes with a fortune forecast of that zodiac animal in the year of the pig, as divined by well-known fortune-teller Peter So.

A collection of specially designed ‘Softhard' zodiac theme laisee red packets are also being given out as free gifts to customers when they purchase the Grilled Curry Pork Burger meal.

The multimedia marketing drive includes TV, radio, in-store materials and online media. "Customers are being reminded of the new product at every possible touch point," Lai said.
