Mattel recall casts shadow over China

ASIA-PACIFIC - Mattel's recall of more than a million China-produced toys, including popular characters Elmo and Dora the Explorer, has raised global concerns about the safety of imports from the mainland.

The incident marks the third recall of toys carrying the made in China label in recent weeks. In Asia, Toys R Us has pulled specific batches of Fisher-Price products from store shelves. Jean-Michel Dumont, executive vice-president and managing director, Ruder Finn North Asia, said the issue was widely seen as a China problem rather than a Fisher-Price one.

“The company has done most things right so far; now everyone is watching to see how it deals with quality control problems it has using Chinese contractors,” he said.

“The biggest challenge is to deal with and win back parents. Fisher-Price has been the standard-bearer of quality products for infants and toddlers. It now has to show it is worthy of the trust that has been placed in the brand.”
