Marriott plans to open first resort on Hainan island

Marriott International is set to operate and manage its first resort in China, the Sanya Marriott Resort on Hainan island.

SANYA Marriott International is set to operate and manage its first resort in China, the Sanya Marriott Resort on Hainan island. Currently under construction, the 453-room hotel is expected to open in early 2004. Sanya Marriott Resort will be the first resort hotel in Sanya managed by an international hotel group right from the construction stage. When the hotel opens, there will be 3,000 hotel rooms in Sanya. For business events , the resort will have 1,250sqm of meeting space, including a 830sqm ballroom that can be divided into five sections. In addition, the resort will offer five 70sqm meeting rooms and a boardroom. Marriott International president and managing director Mr Ed Fuller said: "China is fast becoming one of the world's most important travel markets and we're delighted that our total lodging portfolio across all brands exceeds 40 hotels either opened or under construction." The resort is situated in the Yalong Bay National Resort on Hainan. Meanwhile, the 369-room JW Marriott Hotel Shanghai has just opened making it the first JW Marriott in China.
