Mango fights off rival with major campaign in Asia

Spanish fashion retailer Mango is launching its first major advertising push across Asia. Mango will run print and outdoor ads initially in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, with the Philippines to follow later in the year.

The clothing and accessories chain is handling creative in-house but handed the media business, worth an estimated US$9 million, to Carat, also Mango's main media partner in Europe. Dentsu, MEC and MindShare are also thought to have presented credentials to the retailer, which coordinated the pitch from its global headquarters in Barcelona. Mango operates in 11 countries in Asia. The company is expanding rapidly worldwide, having opened new Asian stores in China, Indonesia, Korea and Malaysia since the beginning of the year. However, its success is being challenged by rival Spanish chain, Zara, which recently opened a store in Hong Kong.
