Malaysian telco Tune Talk hunts media agency

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's newest telco operator Tune Talk, which is owned by Tony Fernandes' Tune Venture, is believed to be on a lookout for a media agency.

The telco had recently appointed local shop Imagine to handle it creative business. It is not clear which agencies have been approached by Tune Talk so far.

Tune Talk is headed by local musician Jason Lo, and is part of the Tune group, which is largely owned by Fernandes, CEO of AirAsia.

When contacted by Media, Lo confirmed that Tune Talk, a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), has appointed Imagine for a brand-building exercise but denied calling a media review.

Last year in April Carat Interactive was appointed by Tune Talk, to develop and execute a recruitment campaign in the digital space after a three-way pitch between Rapp Collins and Proximity.

The MVNO intends to launch its commercial operations in the second half of this year. Lo has reportedly said that the service, operating on Celcom’s network, was aimed at the youth market segment and would offer nationwide coverage from the day of launch.

Celcom, a subsidiary of TM International (TMI), owns 49 per cent of Tune Talk. TMI has said that Celcom has the option to buy another 16 per cent of Tune Talk three years after its launch or after it has 1.5 million active subscribers, whichever is earlier.

The budget telco provider has plans of becoming the first pan-Asean MVNO by expanding to Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.
