By Patricia Wee kuala lumpur Home-grown industry exhibition Global Meet Malaysia 2003 has been declared a success by organisers and is likely to become an annual event. This year's show drew some 200 buyers from 37 countries from October 12-17 at the Sunway Lagoon Resort Hotel. The event was a collaboration between Tourism Malaysia and Malaysia Airlines to showcase Malaysia as a conference and incentive destination. Global Meet Malaysia 2003 was officiated by Datuk Abdullah Hj Jonid, director general, Tourism Malaysia. Key speakers included Mr Peter Kerkar, chief executive officer, Cox and Kings, India and Mr Bert van Walbeek, managing director, The Winning Edge, Thailand. Hosted buyers went on a post-tour to one of five destinations, Langkawi, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak and Selangor and Genting. Early this year, Malaysia hosted the 13th Non-Aligned Movement Summit from February 20 to 25, attended by 116 heads of government. The country has successfully won the bid to host the PATA Travel Mart in 2005 and the 2005 ASEAN Tourism Forum. Last year, Malaysia drew 699,924 foreign corporate event delegates compared with 473,486 in 2001, 47.8% increase.
