Malaysian industry chiefs mull fastfood ad ban

Vincent Lee (pictured), president of the Malaysian 4As, is to meet with the Minister of Health and fastfood operators today to discuss proposed curbs to fastfood advertising.

Lee said the three parties will meet to study proposals introduced in Europe and the US to tackle rising obesity levels in Malaysia, the most severe in Southeast Asia where 40 per cent of the country's adult population is considered overweight.

"The Minister (Chua Soi Lek) is aware that obesity is a complex issue, andis not blaming fastfood advertising alone. We will look at issues such as advertising to children, but I'm confident we will move towards self regulation rather than a blanket ban," said Lee.
