Leo Burnett eyes Beijing agency acquisition

BEIJING - Leo Burnett is believed to be finalising a deal to buy China agency W&K Communications, in a bid to revive the Publicis Groupe agency's presence in Beijing.

Earlier this year, Burnett scaled back its Beijing office after poor performances in the city, transferring its Li Ning account team to Shanghai and letting go of up to 20 executives (Media, 15 January).

It is thought that a deal with W&K Communications could be completed as early as May, although Burnett China chairman Michael Wood declined to comment. The China agency houses a 90-strong advertising agency in Beijing, servicing a client roster that includes MengNiu, YuTong, Tsingtao, Cofco and Sinopec.

The group, which formed in January 2004 from the merger of local agencies Welldone and Kap, also has an office in Guangzhou.
