Leader... Swine flu reaction shows lessons of Sars

With clients and agencies already reeling from the global downturn, the timing of the swine flu outbreak could not be worse.

In Asia, it has brought back some uncomfortable memories of Sars, when a ban on face-to-face meetings and plane travel effectively left the industry in limbo. Then, one of the biggest failures was the way the crisis was communicated - the authorities’ slow response in China and Hong Kong may even have exacerbated the problem.

The early signs this time are that the PR effort has been better, with Governments communicating their actions to the public. Maybe some lessons have been learnt.
