Leader... Saatchis failure shows issues in Japan

The decision to roll Saatchi & Saatchi into Fallon in Japan marks a further contraction in Publicis Groupe's presence in the market.

At the end of 2007, Publicis Japan merged with Beacon and Fallon; now Fallon is once again absorbing the remnants of a failed sibling. After a rocky start in Japan (it opened, closed, then reopened), Saatchis had seemed to be making headway, even taking on work for domestic giants such as Toyota. But it has failed to withstand the financial tsunami engulfing Japan. There are plenty of multinational agencies seeking opportunities as domestic giant Dentsu suffers. The problem is, few of them are in any state themselves to capitalise.
