Kuala Lumpur secrets

What event planners need to know about Malaysia's capital

WHEN TO GO
Kuala Lumpur is hot and humid most of the year. Although it rains all-year round, the wettest months are March to April and September to November. KL’s ethnic diversity means religious festivals and celebrations are common, but can leave public transport more crowded than usual.
During public holidays, the city can empty as the city’s inhabitants head for the beaches and hills. In more liberal KL, Ramadan does not pose the same “where to eat” questions that affect the more devout Muslim areas on the east coast.

GETTING AROUND
KL Sentral Station, not far from the heart of the city, is the capital’s transport hub. Top of the list is a door-to-door, fuss-free and comfortable half-hour rail-link from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on the KLIA Ekspres high-speed train. From KL Sentral, it is a short taxi ride or light-rail journey to hotels, offices, restaurants, shops and KL’s downtown attractions.
KL Sentral is more than just a pit-stop. Onsite are two modern hotels – one offers French flair with a Middle Eastern twist, while the second is American, fashionable and full of attitude. Both are excellent destinations for meetings. The 420-room Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur and the 510-room Hilton Kuala Lumpur have ample meeting facilities and target corporate groups.

WHERE TO HOLD AN EVENT
Kuala Lumpur Tower, one of the tallest telecommunications towers in the world at 421m high, offers an outdoor venue for barbecues and banquets in the surrounding rainforest park. The Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve features a flat, open venue the size of two football fields, called the Rainforest in the City. Visitors walk 15 minutes from the tower on a nature trail to get to it.
Guides are available to escort groups and point out the many plant species along the way. Rainforest in the City can fit 150 people for barbecues and campfires, or groups of 300 people for cocktails. Catering can be arranged upon request.
Carcosa Seri Negara is a 13-suite boutique hotel that takes you back to Kuala Lumpur’s
colonial era. The property offers high teas and croquet in the gardens, just 15 minutes from
central KL – all with full butler service.
Events can be held in the hotel’s 1.6-hectare gardens or in the marquee. The entire property can also be hired for private corporate functions.
The huge purpose-built structure beside the main Malaysia Tourism Centre building in central KL is the Saloma Theatre Restaurant, a place where food and culture come together. It is an outlet with four distinct sections: the bistro, theatre, lounge and courtyard.
The largest, the theatre, can seat 400 diners. Guests dine buffet-style while being
entertained by a series of cultural performances from around Asia. The hour-long show starts
at 8.30pm every night of the week. The show, which can be viewed without having dinner,
is ideal for incentive groups.
