Kuala Lumpur meet impresses FIGO

FIGO is the worldwide organisation of obstetricians and gynaecologists from more than 100 countries that promotes the wellbeing of women and raises the standard of practice in obstetrics and gynaecology. Thousands of gynaecologists and obstetricians met in Kuala Lumpur to analyse new medical breakthroughs and problems that can be addressed by low-cost technology and techniques.

Challenges With delegates from 100 countries, translators were on hand and the congress was also translated into both French and Spanish. Accommodating 8,294 people was also a huge logistical headache. To ease this problem, organisers contracted 49 official hotels for the congress and had a specific allotment at each hotel. Execution Congress highlights included a public forum on women's health and a fellowship programme for healthcare providers from the world's least developed countries. In addition, pharmaceutical companies, medical products and system manufacturers, publishers and educational organisations also showcased their services at the congress. Delegates were also offered a wide selection of international and local cuisine, with four catering outlets of varying types set up around the centre. The event saw 442 invited speakers and a further 1,891 presenters delivered oral, video and poster presentations. In total 6,503 delegates and 727 accompanying partners from 149 countries and 958 exhibitors participated in FIGO 2006. Verdict Expressing his satisfaction with the event, Lord Naren Patel, chairman of the FIGO 2006 Congress Organising Committee says: "We have the best convention centre for FIGO with the KLCC, a perfect venue in delightful surroundings that helped to make things easy."
