Several hotels in the heart of Hong Kong are undergoing major renovation projects and some new high-class property openings are also on the way. Shannon Sweeney reports

Only two minutes’ walk from the Star Ferry Pier in Tsim Sha Tsui, the Marco Polo Hongkong is one of the brand’s three properties in the area. On the sixth floor, new restaurant Cucina is the hotel’s highlight for private events with an outdoor terrace overlooking the Hong Kong city skyline and several different cooking styles on offer within the one restaurant.

The hotel finished renovations on its public spaces and conference facilities in 2007, and room renovations are due to start midway through this year.

RECENT RENOVATIONS
The Hotel Miramar on Nathan Road has just unveiled its newly renovated L-shaped ballroom featuring 18 handmade chandeliers. The extended events space can hold up to 1,000 for cocktail functions. The hotel’s new look takes on a modern minimalist feel with silver and black colours – quite different to other properties in the area.

Its 525 guestrooms are also being completely remodelled and will be completed in stages by the third quarter of this year. The entire refurbishment project will cost US$50 million.
The hotel’s most recent major event was the off-site catering for the corporate hospitality
tents during the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon in February.

The 495-room Langham Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui has recently completed the first phase of a three-year renovation, with four floors now fully completed. The US$22 million renovation still has two more stages to go, one to finish this year and one in 2009. All rooms are being completely remodelled with new layouts, furniture, bathrooms and technology.
