The ex-Saatchis regional CEO met with two other networks before deciding on JWT, including Grey Global Group and, according to speculation, an Interpublic agency.
"I was really lucky to be able to talk to three of the global networks and I just got a really strong sense of the huge changes happening at JWT," said Pitcher.
"There's a new focus on creativity and a new energy at the company." His appointment accompanies a number of internal changes at JWT, which have resulted in the South African overseeing an expanded region that comprises 14 countries. Bryan Cooper, managing director of Northeast and Southeast Asia, will retire to Australia after 16 years with the agency, while SEA area director Mark Webster becomes chairman of JWT's Thailand operation.
Pitcher will also take charge of India and Central Asia, with Central Asia area director Mike Khanna set to retire in December.
As JWT president Michael Maedel pointed out, Pitcher's arrival will allow a smooth transition. "Patrick will come in with a clearly defined regional role," said Maedel.
"He is a very experienced professional with proven skills in managing an agency based on product and people quality." sm
