JW Marriott Phuket reports rise in teambuilding trend

PHUKET JW Marriott Phuket Resport and Spa's in-house teambuilding unit has reported a substantial rise in business and is leading a regional push of team activities at Marriott properties.

Sean Panton, director of corporate teambuilding at the property, said: "We have had almost 30 different programmes already this year. Our clients have included blue-chip firms such as Goldman Sachs. "In the first six months of 2006, teambuilding revenue has already hit our whole-year target. "We run a number of specialist programmes that have proven popular. With Rhythm Nation, a corporate group will be introduced to a piece of Thai music played on traditional instruments. "After splitting into groups for an hour, they then reconvene and, with a little practice, they can play the tune together almost perfectly." Another programme is based on the hugely successful Survivor television series. This programme can either be held entirely on-site or can involve a motorboat race around nearby islands following a trail of clues. The corporate teambuilding unit has also developed a specialised product, Awakenings, aimed at executives. This programme integrates a number of meditation and wellness techniques to teach highly stressed business people how to focus, relax and look after their physical and psychological health. Panton is involved in discussions with a number of other Marriott group properties in the region to determine the possibilities of extending the JW Marriott Phuket's expertise to other destinations.
