Jeff Goodby on Asian creativity

BALI - A fellow inhabitant of the Pacific Rim, I'll soon be welcoming you to the Spikes 2008.

Sharing an ocean with many of you, I feel a particular kinship with the nations represented here, and with our collective need not to leave styrofoam things on our beaches.

Obviously, what may well be the world’s most exciting advertising markets are now represented at the Spikes. I have loved this show from afar because it popularises distinctive national senses of humor and popular culture and beauty that add to the experiences of anyone seeing this stuff. The Spikes makes you prouder than ever to be a part of the family of man.

I also feel that the immensity of the markets in Asia has led great thinkers here to solutions that will inform the way the world converses in the decades to come. You are the future of all of us, every day.

Finally, I hope it’s okay to say this, but I’m looking forward to judging the Spikes for totally selfish reasons. I expect to come away with a much deeper understanding of what I consider to be the world’s most dynamic marketing community, doing some of my favourite work anywhere. I also expect to immensely enjoy the panel of judges, before whom I expect to be mercilessly schooled.

I can’t imagine a better way to spend a week.
